Nondiscrimination, r...

This year Sen. Ben McAdams is at it again. I mean really, the nerve of this guy to think that all Utahns should be treated equally and with respect; how does he justify such ridiculous positions? Forget the fact that more than 70 percent of Utahns agree with passing a statewide nondiscrimination bill, what do ‘We the People’ know, anyway?

The time is now

For anyone that hasn’t been paying attention, the 2012 presidential campaign season is in full swing. We’ve already seen a near tie in Iowa between Mitt Romney and Rick (Google it) Santorum, and by the time this column hits the streets the New Hampshire primary will be a thing of the past.

While Congress and the White House continue to ignore the repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, the GOP field of presidential wannabes has done an admirable job of keeping this issue in the mainstream media spotlight. For this week’s fun, we turn the spotlight to Mitt “I’ll Say Anything To Win” Romney and his three-tiered approach to marriage.

Farewell, Barney

On Nov. 28, 2011 Congressman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) announced that he would retire at the end of his current term, ending his 32-year career in the United States Congress. Since coming out in 1987, Frank has commonly been regarded as one of the most prominent gay politicians in America.

Last week an unfortunate incident occurred at the Occupy Salt Lake City camp in Pioneer Park. A man died. Preliminary speculation is that the death was the result of a drug overdose and/or carbon monoxide poisoning from a propane heater found in the man's tent. In response to this tragedy, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker ordered the camp closed and instructed the police to evict the protestors on Saturday, Nov. 12 if they hadn't already vacated the property by sundown.

In my last column I discussed the Midvale City Council District 3 race between Alan Anderson and Paul Hunt. This race has garnered quite a bit of media attention over the past few weeks, primarily due to the recent exposure of Paul Hunt as a criminal. Hunt pleaded guilty to misappropriating funds from his previous employer, a plea bargain that reduced the felony charge to a misdemeanor and included two years of probation, suspended jail time and more than $30,000 in restitution. In the six months since the sentence, he’s managed to repay about $200, according to Fox 13.

Election Day

Well folks, the day has finally arrived (nearly). By the time this column hits the streets the 2011 election cycle will be almost over. The actual get-your-butt-to-the-polls date is Tuesday, Nov. 8. Many of you (I hope) will have by now already voted by mail or through early voting. If not, get your butt to the poll or send in that vote that is hanging out in that stack of mail you’ve been ignoring.

Get out the vote

Over the course of the past several months I’ve made an effort to be a kinder, gentler columnist. I’ve refrained from name-calling and aggressive commentary, for the most part. However, last month something happened that is making me think that maybe it’s time to get pissed off again.
