5Anderson Cooper comes out. In an emailed response to Andrew Sullivan, who had asked for feedback on a story about gay celebrities coming out, Anderson Cooper gave Sullivan permission to publish the fact that he is a gay man. FAVE COMMENT: Jerry Buie, “So who gets the toaster oven?”

4Man attacked, called gay slur outside Salt Lake City bar. A man was called a homophobic slur and hit on the head with a cocktail glass outside a popular Salt Lake City bar, sending him to the hospital on July 8. Jake Allred was outside Maxwell’s in Salt Lake City when a man approached him and asked him if he found some women in the bar attractive. Avoiding the subject, the assailant said, “you kind of sound like a faggot,” Allred said. The attacker then slammed the glass into the side of Allred’s head. FAVE COMMENT: Michael Snyder, “Just 48 hours later (my first 5 min. in downtown Salt Lake City, BTW), I was also called a ‘faggot’ from a car outside Maxwell’s – for no discernible reason and probably by the same A-hole who committed this crime!”

3After teen’s suicide, Ogden to hold community meeting, candlelight vigil. On Monday, April 23, an 18-year-old Ogden resident on a community panel spoke about the dangers of bullying. Alex Smith told the packed room about the bullying his boyfriend, Jack, experienced at school. What no one in the room yet knew, including Alex, was that Jack had already taken his own life. FAVE COMMENT: Angel O’Fire, “There is certainly no glory in being responsible for making a person end their own lives, and to those out there who seem to find it amusing, I have one thing to say, which is get a life!”

2Mormon Church launches website about homosexuality. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints launched a new website to discuss its position on gays and lesbians. The site, mormonsandgays.org, collects videos and documents of speeches given by church authorities on the topic of homosexuality. FAVE COMMENT: Brian Sanderson, “Utter bullshit. There is one video called ‘Connecting and Understanding’ — in 4 minutes of conversation, with 9 different speakers, they never even mention the word gay, lesbian, same-sex attraction, etc. Refers to it all as ‘it’. Gross.”

1Anti-gay group releases ad comparing homosexuality to pedophilia. The National Organization for Marriage released an ad saying that allowing gay couples to marry would be akin to legalizing pedophilia and incest. FAVE COMMENT: Maria Kogan of Montpelier, Vermont, “Today I learned that my marriage is a ‘behavior.'”
