For parents and caregivers, the event will be online on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 6-8 p.m. Register for the training at bit.ly/competency-parents

Businesses and anyone who wants to learn more about LGBTQIA+ terms and concepts, the online training is Friday, Feb. 5. 12-2 p.m. Register at bit.ly/competency101

And for medical and mental health providers, the course is Friday, Feb. 26, noon to 2 p.m. Register at bit.ly/compentency101_med

The UPC also offers LGBTQIA+ cultural competency training to businesses and community groups. These include educators, caseworkers, health care professionals, mental health professionals, and youth service providers.

This training is at a beginner level and provides an understanding of the experiences of LGBTQIA+ people. And how to work in our homes, places of work, congregations, and communities to improve the lives of members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The training covers basic language, current research, and best practices related to the LGBTQIA+ community. As a result, they will understand the privilege and daily experiences of LGBTQIA+ people. Additionally, the training includes micro-aggressions, intersectionality, multiple marginalized statuses, the experiences of LGBTQIA+ youth (disparities in the group), and community resources available.

During the training, participants gain increased familiarity, sensitivity, and understanding of cultural characteristics, history, values, belief systems, and behaviors of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Participants also learn that cultural differences (and similarities) exist and practice viewing these without assigning values (better or worse, right or wrong).

Registrants will receive a Zoom invite to the training 24 hours before the training.
