Bestselling author Rob Osler coming to SLC to discuss new queer historical mystery

Salt Lake City’s Under the Umbrella Bookstore will host USA Today bestselling author Rob Osler on March 11 for a book signing and discussion of his latest novel, The Case of the Missing Maid. Joining him will be local queer mystery writer CJ Connor, author of Board to Death.

Osler, a Mystery Writers of America Award-winning author and finalist for the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, Agatha, and Lefty Awards, has crafted a captivating historical mystery set in 1890s Chicago. His novel follows Harriet Morrow, the city’s first female detective, as she unravels a case involving a missing maid, clandestine queer spaces, and deep-seated corruption — all while solving crimes by bicycle.

Critics have praised The Case of the Missing Maid for its rich historical detail and compelling LGBTQ+ representation. Publishers Weekly awarded it a starred review, calling it an “excellent historical series launch” with “an unforgettable heroine.”

Osler and Connor will discuss queer representation in mystery fiction, historical research, and the craft of writing. The event will appeal to fans of queer literature, historical fiction, and gripping detective stories.

Under the Umbrella Bookstore will host the signing at 6:30 p.m. on March 11. Copies of The Case of the Missing Maid will be available for purchase.
